About the Company

Who are we?

The Ukrainian industrial company Interpipe is a leading manufacturer and exporter of pipe and railway products, one of the 3 largest producers of seamless pipes in Europe and one of the 5 largest producers of railway wheels in the world.

The Company structure includes 3 production divisions: Steel, Pipe Products and Railway Products. This allows Interpipe to control the quality of its products at every production stage: from raw materials to the delivery of finished products to customers. Moreover, this is a unique competitive advantage, as having our own raw materials processing and steelmaking facilities significantly minimises our CO2 emissions and reduces the carbon footprint of our finished products.

Interpipe's strategy is to diversify its sales and markets as much as possible. The Company's products are supplied to more than 80 countries through a network of sales offices located in key markets in Europe, North America and the Middle East. The railway products are sold under the KLW brand. Currently, almost 2/3 of the Company's sales take place in these regions.

Such strong diversification requires continuous investment in new equipment and the development of new premium products. Over the past decade, Interpipe's total investment in new steel production and modernisation of pipe and wheel production exceeded $1 billion. As a result, the Company is now one of a few suppliers of pipe products with premium threaded connections of its own design for oil and gas production. In addition, Interpipe is increasing its share in the high-speed passenger railway wheels market.

Our customers include the world's leading oil producers, machine-building concerns, real estate development companies, as well as international carriage building and repair holdings. In addition, Interpipe has a long history of cooperation with national railways in various countries.

History of Interpipe

In the late nineteenth century, the city of Dnipro (then known as Katerynoslav) was one of the centres of Ukrainian heavy industry.

1891 — the Gantke nail factory was founded, which would later become the basis for Interpipe's metallurgical business

The first plant of the future Interpipe Group was rapidly developing its industrial capacity and expanding its product portfolio. Over the 4 years of its existence, the plant changed its focus to the pipe business, using the state-of-the-art seamless production technology of that time.

1895 — the first seamless pipe rolled off the production line

In the 1930s, the plant was actively developing. In less than 10 years, an open-hearth workshop with its own steel production was launched and later the production of railway wheels began in the country's first wheel-rolling workshop.

1933 — the first railway wheel was manufactured at the plant

Over the following decades, the plant's product portfolio expanded to include oil and gas pipes, drill pipes and bearing pipes. In the late 1950s, the first electric welding workshop was put into operation and production of a wide range of welded pipes began.

1990 — Scientific and Production Investment Group Interpipe Corporation was founded and the innovation period began.

Thanks to a new progressive approach to production, in 1994, Nyzhnodniprovskyi Tube-Rolling Plant (the future Interpipe NTRP) was the first among the former Soviet plants to be certified by the American Petroleum Institute (API). This allowed the plant to start supplying oil and gas pipes abroad and gave impetus to further export development.

1999 — the KLW railway brand was created, uniting the enterprises under the Interpipe brand

For a quarter of a century, railway operators and carriage builders from all over the world have been buying Interpipe railway products under the KLW brand. Established in Switzerland in 1999, KLW WHEELCO promotes the company's commitment to development, innovation and strong cooperation.

Over time, large seamless and welded pipe manufacturing enterprises in the Dnipro region were united under the Interpipe brand. The company's pipe and railway business entered the international market, expanding its customer portfolio.

2007 — the company launched Ukraine's largest sustainable development project, the construction of a new steel-melting complex

Innovation and decarbonisation became one of Interpipe's top priorities and it was decided to change the quality approach to the steelmaking business and launch a comprehensive investment project to build a new plant. In 2008, the Group acquired and began modernising a scrap metal procurement facility that would later become Interpipe Vtormet to provide raw materials for the new production. That same year, we established the first scrapyards of our future nationwide network.

2008 — we launched the production of premium products

As part of a comprehensive investment programme, Interpipe increased its pipe and wheel production capacity. For the first time in Ukraine, a new type of premium anti-corrosion, highly tight UPJ threaded connection for the oil and gas industry was launched. New high-performance wheel finishing lines were also put into operation to increase the volume of export products.

2012 — we launched Interpipe Steel, an innovative steel-melting facility

Interpipe opened Ukraine's first electric arc furnace steel-melting plant, attracting over $1 billion in investment for the entire project, including the construction of extra infrastructure. The new plant replaced open-hearth production, significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions and creating more than 500 new jobs.

Between 2012 and 2014, we invested heavily in technology to improve product quality by building new furnaces and processing lines. A separate project to innovate operational processes was production digitalisation, which included the creation of digital twins of Interpipe's industrial sites and the launch of new financial and commercial systems. In 2014, after losing almost half of its sales market due to Russia's aggression against Ukraine, Interpipe Group was able to quickly shift its focus to the markets of Europe, the Middle East and America. Responding to market demand, the Group switched from gross to order-based production and started developing new products.

2017 — the Group launched the production of railway axles and wheelsets

A qualitatively new stage in the development of the Group's railway business began: in-house wheelset assembly. The company created an opportunity to supply finished products directly to customers without cooperation with other manufacturers. At this time, the pipe segment was focused on developing and implementing the technology for the production of oil and gas pipes with the UPJTM line of premium and semi-premium connections.

2018 — new pipe finishing lines were launched in Nikopol

The Group continued to expand and improve its range of line pipes for the construction industry. High-quality finishing of complete products allowed the Group to expand its product portfolio and establish itself as a reliable supplier in the market.

2019 — new pipe and coupling cutting lines were installed

Thanks to the new production lines, the Group increased the production of UPJTM gas-sealed pipes and introduced the innovative UPJ-F flush joint.

2020 — a project to increase the production capacity of the railway division was launched

In 2020 – 2022, an investment project was implemented to increase the production of machined wheels and wheel finishing; we also opened a new site for assembling wheel sets.

2021 — the Group's division structure was complete and seamless pipe rolling shops were consolidated

Over the past decade, Interpipe Group has been continuously improving equipment and optimising processes at its facilities. The Group's business model is based on a division structure.

2022 — a corporate Headquarters for Assistance to Mobilised Employees was launched

Since the beginning of the large-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russian troops, the corporate Headquarters for Assistance to Mobilised Employees, established in 2014, has significantly expanded within the company. Currently, more than 1,000 Interpipe employees are serving in the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The Group initiated a large social package to support its employees and their families, especially for the enterprises in Nikopol.

2023 — capital investment programmes for production resumed

Despite the ongoing hostilities, Interpipe Group is actively developing its industrial capacities, employing around 9,000 people. To increase its production capacity for the pipe business, the Group invested in the construction of a new heat treatment plant in Nikopol.

Green Metallurgy

Interpipe is one of the leaders in industrial sector decarbonisation in Ukraine and Europe.

Back in the early 2010s, after the closure of a dirty open-hearth steel production, the Company launched its innovative electric steel-melting complex Interpipe Steel in accordance with the most stringent environmental requirements of the European Union. This is the largest environmental investment in the Ukrainian industry since the country's independence, totalling about $1 billion.

Built in accordance with the most stringent environmental requirements of the European Union, Interpipe Steel's electric steel-melting complex is a true flagship of green metallurgy in Ukraine. With emissions of less than 300 kg of CO2 per tonne of steel, our plant is among the best in the European steel industry in this respect.

Currently, out of the 3 known steelmaking technologies, only electrometallurgy allows us to meet the standards of the European Green Deal, which aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2030. The launch of Interpipe Steel to replace the outdated, environmentally unfriendly open-hearth production reduced CO2 emissions by 10 times, natural gas consumption by 8 times and harmful substances by 2.5 times.
