In 2024 Interpipe, a global producer of steel pipes and railway products based in Ukraine, reduced specific CO2 emissions per ton of seamless pipes and railway products by 61% and 46%, respectively, compared to 2010 levels.
The significant progress on the decarbonization path was achieved mainly due to the modernization of steelmaking facilities. The Company replaced its environmentally harmful open-hearth furnace (OHF) with a greenfield project - an innovative electric arc furnace (EAF) complex called Interpipe Steel. Alongside associated production the total investment amounted to USD1 billion. Still, it is the largest environmental investment in Ukraine’s industrial sector since Independence.
Additionally, the reduction in CO2 emissions was supported by an increased share of premium products in Interpipe's sales and by changes in our product portfolio.
A notable achievement was the significant reduction in carbon-intensive electricity consumption and the expansion of green electricity sources. In 2024, the share of electricity from renewables and hydro sources reached 28% in Interpipe’s energy mix – rose from 7% in 2010. In total, the share of carbon-neutral sources (nuclear, hydro and renewables) accounted for 64% of the Company's total electricity consumption last year.
So, Interpipe's specific GHG emissions reduction rates are one of the best in the industry and fully aligned with the European Green Deal goal for 2030 - to reduce emissions by 55%.
Vladyslav Varnavskyi, Director for Environment and Industrial Safety at Interpipe:
- Although the Company has achieved remarkable progress on the decarbonization path over the past 14 years, our future goals are even more ambitious. By 2030, Interpipe plans to reduce specific CO2 emissions per ton of seamless pipes and railway products by 26% and 25%, respectively, compared to 2023 levels. This will be driven by the new investment projects in the Pipe and Railway Products Divisions, continuous improvement in energy efficiency, a faster transition to carbon-neutral energy sources (nuclear and hydro+renewables) and selecting suppliers based on their CO2 emission levels and targets.
